Darwin it's not itself an operating system, it's just the kernel that power OS X. Being Darwin opensource there is also it's open counterpart called opendarwin. The opendarwin community also develop the a GNU-Darwin OS that is a free-software only OS and adopt GNOME as a userland enviroment.
