Pagal principinę ląstelės struktūrą skiriami prokariotai ir eukariotai. Eukariotinės ląstelės yra sudėtingesnės, jų branduolys nuo likusios ląstelės dalies atskirtas dviguba membrana, tuo tarpu prokariotų (pvz., bakterijų) ląstelėse genomas nuo likusios ląstelės dalies neatskirtas.
