By most accounts, the 'Taisho democracy' period began in 1905 with the Hibiya riot, and ended six years after the Taisho Emperor died in 1932. Gordon suggests 'Imperial Democracy' is more accurate, as a descriptive term for the period between 1905 to 1932, reflecting both the people's reverence of the Emperor and paradoxical thirst for better political engagement.

The Emperor's personal name was Yoshihito (嘉仁).
