Jéthro (en hébreu : יתרו, yiṯrō, Bible ; en arabe : يثرون, yathrūn) est le beau-père de Moïse 1. Il est aussi appelé Réuel 2, Qéni 3 ou Hobab 4 . Le Coran le nomme Shu`ayb 5 (en arabe : شعيب ) ; il y apparaît comme le prophète des Madianites. D'où son surnom d’ Abu Madian (« le père, ou l'homme, des Madianites »).

Jethro, also called Reuel, or Hobab, in the Old Testament, priest of Midian of the Kenite clan, with whom Moses took refuge after he killed an Egyptian and whose daughter Moses married (Exodus 3:1). After the Exodus, Jethro visited the Hebrews encamped at the “mountain of God” and brought with him Moses’ wife and sons.

Jethro was an upstanding man and an exemplary father-in-law. He practiced hospitality inviting Moses to stay with him. He wished Moses well when Moses followed God's call to return to Egypt ( Exodus 4:18 ). He protected his daughter and grandsons when Moses sent them back to Midian ( Exodus 18:2–4 ).

Jethro [N] [H] [S] his excellence, or gain, a prince or priest of Midian, who succeeded his father Reuel. Moses spent forty years after his exile from the Egyptian court as keeper of Jethro's flocks.
