Princess Ida tells the story of a woman who rejects the patriarchal world in which she was raised, and strives to create a better world for herself and for all women, only to fail in her efforts, due to her reliance on other women for their support and her own flawed reasoning.

Nov 6, 2019 · Gilbert and Sullivan's eighth collaboration, Princess Ida; or, Castle Adamant, opened on 5 January 1884 at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 246 performances. To create the libretto, Gilbert turned to a play he had written in 1870 entitled The Princess, and reused much of that play's dialogue and retained its three act structure but he wrote new lyrics for Sullivan to set.

Ida is her name. Grande Dame: Lady Blanche Have a Gay Old Time Honour Before Reason: Hilarion saves Ida from falling into a stream, but she still wants to punish him for his deception.

Princess Ida; or, Castle Adamant opened on January 5, 1884 and was the eighth operatic collaboration for Gilbert and Sullivan. It nestled between Iolanthe and The Mikado – two of their biggest successes. By comparison, Princess Ida was not an enormous hit. But its longevity is a testament to its many charms.

Princess Ida goes into a speech about noble and important women in history and myth and explains how the fountain of knowledge is open to women here. She tells them they may go and that Lady Psyche has to go meet the new initiates, who flood in frequently.

In 1884, when Gilbert and Sullivan created “Princess Ida or Castle Adamant,” women’s education was a new and controversial subject, Darwinian evolution was yet to be recognized as a scientific consensus and the term “feminism” had not yet come to represent the movement toward women’s rights.

One of Gilbert's more controversial librettos is Princess Ida, a story making fun of woman's education.I am asking this question in relation to how Princess Ida should be viewed as a text. If his opinions of learned women were positive, the libretto is probably simply a satire of something that has come into fashion.
