Call numbers are a method to keep books in order. At UCSC, we use the Library of Congress (LC) Classification system for most of our books and periodicals, an alphanumeric system which groups books by subject categories. Call numbers can usually be located on the lower part of the spine of the book. Search for the book in our Library Search.

Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) has been actively maintained since 1898 to catalog materials held at the Library of Congress. By virtue of cooperative cataloging other libraries around the United States also use LCSH to provide subject access to their collections.
