2 Nat turner revolt: 1831 Nat Turner was under the impression that he was a slave who had been chosen by God to carry out a certain task. Being literate in reading, writing, and religion, he even gave sermons to some of the other slaves in his household. A worker who seemed to be submissive to his superiors launched a revolt with the assistance of his supporters.

In August, 1831, Nat Turner led a group of enslaved and free black men in a rebellion that killed over fifty white men, women, and children. Nat Turner understood his rebellion as an act of God.
