The Portolá expedition was a Spanish voyage of exploration in 1769–1770 that was the first recorded European land entry and exploration of the interior of the present-day U.S. state of California.

Gaspar de Portolá, (born c. 1723, Balaguer, Spain—died c. 1784, Mexico or Spain), Spanish military officer, the first governor of Upper California, and founder of Monterey and San Diego. The son of a noble family, Portolá entered the Spanish army in 1734. After 30 years of service in Europe, he rose to the rank of captain.

The Portolá Expedition ultimately accomplished its purpose of finding Monterey Bay The San Francisco region was further explored by Lieutenant Pedro Fages in 1770-1772, which included the Spanish discovering the Golden Gate. The Fages expedition was then followed by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776.

Gaspar de Portolá was born at Balaguer in the province of Catalonia. As a young man, he joined the army and soon rose to the rank of captain of dragoons in the España Regiment.
