John XXIII had a vision and hope. He made a decision based on that hope and based on the virtue of prudence, a virtue that he spoke of a great deal. John—whom today we call Saint John XXIII—believed that Jesus’ love was for everybody in the world. He wanted the church to be a strong voice proclaiming that love in modern times to modern people.

On June 3, 1963, Pope John XXIII died in his bed at age 81. The world mourned John XXIII and he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Johnson in December 1963. Pope John XXIII generally maintained a good reputation among those who remembered him and he was often titled "the Good."

The child of a peasant family, he began his career in the church with no connections of any significance and no powerful patron to guide him through the maze of ecclesiastical politics. His steady climb was above all due to his readiness to subdue his own preferences, follow orders, and adjust without complaint to the will of his superiors.

2018/5/24 · Pope Saint John XXIII is well known as the pope who set the Catholic Church in a new and modern direction by convening the Second Vatican Council, which has had a tremendous impact on how the Church sees itself and its relationship with the world in this new era. But he was also a well-beloved pope.
