Since the racial classification system (both the 'traditional' and American system) don't have a box to put Iranians, they're usually lumped as white, officialy speaking (as weird as that sounds). It also groups Iran into the Middle East, and asks Iranians, Egyptians or any North African or Middle Eastern person to select "white." I find that to be rather limiting, as most Americans probably wouldn't consider an Egyptian or Moroccan white depending on appearance. The majority of Iranians are of Persian ethnicity. Even within this ethnic group, the Persians have a diverse ancestry, but all of them have one thing in common: their language. Persians speak Persian, also called Farsi. The statistics from 2011 shows the ethnicity breakdown for Iran as follows: 51 percent Persian 24 percent Azeri
