Yokote (横手市, Yokote-shi) is a city located in Akita Prefecture, Japan. As of 31 December 2019, the city had an estimated population of 89,574 in 34,240 households, [1] and a population density of 130 persons per km². The total area of the city is 693.04 km 2 (267.58 sq mi).

Akita has been one of the most important cities in the Tōhoku region since ancient times. The Akita clan (Ando clan) held this part of northern Japan ( Mutsu Province) in the 15-16th centuries. [2] The Satake clan built Kubota Castle in 1604. [3] The modern city of Akita was established on April 1, 1889. [4]

History. Akita Prefecture, tucked away in the north-western part of Tohoku in Japan along the sea, is famous for 3 things: rice, sake, and beautiful women. Every year 30-40 fresh new faces make their way from abroad to this fantastic land to be part of the local community as participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
