The Atari 8-bit line was born in November 1979 with the release of the Atari 800 & 400 personal computers. They were followed by the XL series in 1983 which included the 1200XL, 600XL and 800XL. The XE series, released in 1985, were the penultimate machines in the line and included the 65XE and 130XE.

The CX10 was replaced after a year by a simpler and less expensive CX40. The addition of the Atari joystick port to other platforms helped it retain its popularity. It was the standard for the Atari 8-bit family of home computers and was compatible with the VIC-20, Commodore 64 and 128, MSX, and later the Atari ST and Amiga.

The first completed hardware was for the Atari 8-Bit line of computers and development has begun for other systems (Coleco ADAM, Apple II, Commodore 64, Atari Lynx, ZX Spectrum and more) with the goal of supporting as many old systems as possible.
