Franz Bopp was born the sixth child of the bookkeeper in the division of horse fodder and carriages of the electoral administration (kurftirstlicher Futter- und Wagenschreiber). When Bopp’s native Mainz became French in 1801, following the peace treaty of Luneville, the Bopp family followed the elector to Aschaffenburg in Bavaria.
