WebIan Pierre Watt was born in Windermere, Westmorland, in the lake country of England. He went to the Dover County School for Boys, where his Scottish father was headmaster. In 1938, during the heyday of literary critic F. R. Leavis and his journal Scrutiny, Watt earned a First in English at St. John's College, Cambridge.
