Le pendjabi est une langue indo-aryenne. Elle est dérivée de la langue Shauraseni (en), qui était la principale langue médiévale du Nord de l'Inde. Le pendjabi est apparu en tant que langue indépendante au XIIe siècle 2. Fariduddin Ganjshakar est généralement reconnu comme le premier grand poète de la langue pendjabi.
