Switzerland is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It has borders of 1,858 km with France to the west, Italy to the south, Austria and Liechtenstein to the east and Germany to the north. The total area is 41,285 km2 or 15,940 square miles. Known for its pristine mountain ranges, the Alps and Jura, it also has lush rolling hills and large lakes.

It is an enclave surrounded by French territories (department of Haute-Savoie in the south, Ain in the north). Its border is 107.5 kilometres long but only 4.5km long with the Swiss confederation.

Geography To the east, Saxon Switzerland transitions into the Lusatian Highlands and, to the west, into the Ore Mountains. The adjacent Czech part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is known as the Bohemian Switzerland. The highest elevation in Saxon Switzerland is the Großer Zschirnstein at 562 m above sea level.
