Every distribution of Unix was slightly different and incompatible with each other. Some were derived from the original AT&T Bell Lab’s Unix, like HP-UX and AIX.

Origins of Unix. In the late 1960s, AT&T Bell Labs, MIT, and General Electric collaborated on a computer called the GE-645. The GE-645's operating system was called MULTICS ( Mult iplexed I nformation and C omputing S ystem).
