Charles I, (born Nov. 19, 1600, Dunfermline Palace, Fife, Scot.—died Jan. 30, 1649, London, Eng.), King of Great Britain and Ireland (1625–49). Son of James I, he acquired from his father a belief in the divine right of kings, and his earliest surviving letters reveal a distrust of the House of Commons. He became king in 1625 and soon after married Henrietta Maria.
