Alphabet and Pronunciation The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 (29 if letter Hamza considered as a consonant) letters, all of which are considered to be consonants. Vowels are designated by diacritic marks above or below the consonants. Modern Standard Arabic is generally written without short vowels, although vowels within words are pronounced.

The Arabic alphabet contains 28 letters. This means that the Arabic alphabet contains only two more letters than the English alphabet (26 letters). However, unlike English, the Arabic letters are always pronounced in the same way. In English the letter "c" is sometimes pronounced like an "s" (ceasar) and sometimes like a "k" (cucumber).

In English, we use the five vowels a, e, i, o and u after the consonants to show what sound each consonant should make (e.g. 'ma', 'me', 'mo'). In Arabic, we use diacritical marks in place of vowels.
