Articulate brachiopods have something like interlocking hinges (like a door hinge) made from serrated (or tooth like) parts of the shell. On the other hand, inarticulate brachiopods hold their shells together using only their muscles.

There are two major divisions (Classes) of brachiopods: the inarticulate brachiopods and the articulate brachio-pods. Some of the oldest shelly invertebrate fossils known are brachiopods. They have a fossil record stretching back to the start of the Cambrian Period, some 570 million years ago (Table 1). Brachiopods are still living in the world’s oceans.

All but a few brachiopods fall into two basic types, the rhynchonelliform (or articulate) brachiopods and the lingulate (or inarticulate) brachiopods. Rhynchonelliform brachiopods have shells made calcium carbonate and interlocking pegs (teeth) and sockets that form a hinge between the valves.

In temperate waters, the breeding period takes place in midsummer and lasts about a month and a half; in the tropics, however, breeding may take place throughout the year. Inarticulated brachiopods are dioecious. The sex ratio, at least in lingulides, is one to one.
