Emperor Jimmu (神武天皇, Jinmu-tennō) was the legendary first emperor of Japan according to the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki. His accession is traditionally dated as 660 BC. In Japanese mythology, he was a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu, through her grandson Ninigi, as well as a descendant of the storm god Susanoo.
The name of these two chronicles is the Nihon Shoki and the Koji-Ki. The Nihon Shoki states that Jimmu ascended the throne of Japan around 660 B.C., and once he became the first emperor he established the first ruling monarchy of this nation. He is supposedly descended from the sun goddess Amaterasu.
Emperor Jimmu, the first Japanese Emperor, was descended from the heavens to lead to imperial rule. At least, that’s according to Japanese mythology. The story goes that Jimmu was a descendant of Amaterasu and Susanoo. Amaterasu is the sun goddess in Japanese folk tradition and Susanoo is the storm god.
Reigned: 660–585 BCE Emperor Jimmu, or Jinmu-Tennō, was the first emperor of Japan and the founder of the ‘Imperial House of Japan.’ It seems he lived in the Yayoi Period, Japan’s “Iron Age.”
Today, we re-tell the Kojiki’s legend of Emperor Jimmu and how he became the first emperor of Japan. Kashihara Shrine in Kashihara, Nara, where Emperor Jimmu is enshrined Note: In the Kojiki, “Jimmu” acquired his name only after he became the first emperor at Kashihara, Nara.
The first was, Jimmu (660-585 B.C.). Akihito's reign is called Heisei, meaning ("the achievement of complete peace on earth and in the heavens"). Because of the pervasive influence of the Emperor on Japanese life, the adoption of this name for Akihito's reign can be expected to influence Japan's policy.
