This ice sheet was the primary feature of the Pleistocene epoch in North America, commonly referred to as the ice age. It was up to 2 mi (3.2 km) thick in Nunavik, Quebec, Canada, but much thinner at its edges, where nunataks were common in hilly areas.

Courtesy of NOAA Science on a Sphere Ice sheets are large, continental-scale (greater than 50,000 sq. km or 19,305 sq. mi in area) ice masses that accumulate in extensive, high elevation catchment areas. They are drained by smaller outlet glaciers or ice streams that flow out from them in different directions.

The ice sheet extent did not remain static through this period; by 15,000 14C y.a., some retreat of the major North American ice mass had occurred relative to the 'global' glacial maximum position some 3,000 radiocarbon years previously (Dyke & Prest 1987), it still covered most of the continent and was even more extensive in some places.
