Artsakh, officially the Republic of Artsakh (/ ˈ ɑːr t s ɑː x,-s æ x /) or the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (/ n ə ˌ ɡ ɔːr n oʊ k æ r ə ˈ b æ k /), is a breakaway state in the South Caucasus whose territory is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan.Artsakh controls a part of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, including the capital of Stepanakert.

Artsakh also occupied 2 other districts (Fuzuli and Aghdam) partially. The population of the total 7 districts of Azerbaijan not belonging to the Nagorno-Karabach AO but for the most part under occupation of the Republic of Artsakh, was 393,569 in 1979, only a small Armenian minority (3,661 or only 0,93%).
