Skiffle is a genre of folk music with influences from blues, jazz, and American folk music, generally performed with a mixture of manufactured and homemade or improvised instruments.
It was the first British youth music programme, using a skiffle song as its title music and showcasing many skiffle acts. It has been estimated that in the late 1950s, there were 30,000–50,000 skiffle groups in Britain.
The skiffle craze that swept the UK for a couple of years in the late 1950s was short-lived but laid the foundation for decades of successful British Rock and Pop music. Future members of bands such as The Shadows, Led Zeppelin, The Hollies, Deep Purple and, famously, The Beatles first performed as part of skiffle groups. Long description:
British skiffle grew out of the developing post-war British jazz scene, which saw a move away from swing music and towards authentic trad jazz. Among these bands were Bill Bailey Skiffle Group and Ken Colyer 's Jazzmen, a band formed by Chris Barber. Lonnie Donegan played banjo for the Jazzmen, and also performed skiffle music during intervals.
