      As late as 1962 (as evidenced by the film below) it was still referred to as “Formosa” (or “Free China” (自由中國)). But there is also an earlier film (1958) which uses “Taiwan”. Evidently is was to take a few years until the West would exclusively use the name “Taiwan” and stop referring to the island as “Formosa”.
