x86 In 1985 Intel introduced 80386, the first 32-bit processor in the x86 line. An early batch of processors had a defect in one of the 32-bit operations. They were marked as 16-BIT S/W ONLY and sold anyway.
80386: x86 Turns 32-bit Intel's first 32-bit x86 processor was the 80386, released in 1985. One key advantage that this processor had was its 32-bit address bus that allowed it to support up to 4GB of system memory.

At various times, companies such as IBM, VIA, NEC, AMD, TI, STM, Fujitsu, OKI, Siemens, Cyrix, Intersil, C&T, NexGen, UMC, and DM&P started to design or manufacture x86 processors (CPUs) intended for personal computers and embedded systems. Such x86 implementations are seldom simple copies but often employ different internal microarchitecturesand different solutions at th…

X86 History It’s quite amazing that this architecture has witnessed so little (fundamental) change since the 8086 Backward compatibility Imposed early as _the_ ISA (Intel was the first company to produce a 16-bit architecture) Some argue that it’s an ugly ISA Due to it being a set of add-ons rather than a modern re-design But it’s relatively easy to implement in hardware, and Intel’s
