The Bretons ( Breton: Bretoned, Breton pronunciation: [breˈtɔ̃nɛt]) are a Celtic ethnic group native to Brittany. They trace much of their heritage to groups of Brittonic speakers who emigrated from southwestern Great Britain, particularly Cornwall and Devon, mostly during the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain.
In 1928, after carrying out a survey, the scholar Roparz Hemon put at 1.2 million the number of people using Breton as their daily means of communication. At the turn of the 21st century an estimated 500,000 people could understand and speak the language, and public opinion in Brittany strongly favoured the language.
The Bretons of Brittany, France or Breizh, as they call their native land, are the last vestiges of the Celtic Britons that migrated from Great Britain and gave their name to this northwest section of France. They speak both their traditional language, Breton or Brezhoneg and also French, the first language of France.
