Since its independence from the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has maintained close relations with China. In 2013, it was the country where Xi Jinping chose to unveil the Silk Road Economic Belt. While bilateral ties remain steadfast, the perception of China among the local population is far from positive due, not least, to the mass detention of Kazakh nationals and Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
