Comment by Rixa44186 Adding my experience here since it seems activating different crystals before facing the elemental leads to different results. I just did the quest and chose to empower the lesser benthic arcanocrystal (small bluish purple one) and the greater lithic arcanocrystal (big yellow one) before activating the essence amalgamator.
