The geographical region of Ancient Judea at the time of Jesus originally encompassed the territory of the tribe of Judah and later of the ancient Kingdom of Judah. Judea lost its independence to the Romans in the 1st century B.C., by becoming first a tributary kingdom of the Roman Empire, then a Roman province.
