03/03/2001 · Paul I of Russia was the son and successor of Catherine the Great, who took the Romanov throne away from her feeble-minded husband, Tsar Peter III, and had him killed in 1762, an event which ever afterwards preyed on the mind of their son, then a boy of eight. The formidable Catherine had little time for her heir.

11/11/2016 · Peter III died after a short, unpopular reign as Tsar in 1762, when Paul was only seven years old. Catherine the Great assumed the throne, becoming Catherine II, and maintained a distant relationship with her only son throughout her life.

Paul came to the throne on his mother's death, in 1796. By that time he was 42 years old, married, and had an adult son, Alexander, who was 19. The new Tsar had spent his early adulthood being kept at arm's length from the business of ruling Russia, and the historical consensus is that he proved to be a generally incompetent, capricious and poor-tempered ruler.

Catherine the Great of Russia, the Prussian princess who claimed Russia’s throne and brought the Empire to untold new power and influence, suffered a sudden stroke in 1796. She never regained consciousness. If she’d planned on cutting Paul out of the will, she didn’t get it done in time. Paul became Tsar Paul I of Russia.
