Jun 11, 2018 · Hemera was both Aether’s sister and his wife. In the ancient Greek tradition, day and night were separate from the sun and the moon. Gods of the sun were regarded differently from gods of the day. As a primordial god, Aether wasn’t depicted as a humanoid personification of an element. Instead, Aether was considered to literally be that element.

Aether was married to his sister Hemera, the goddess of light. Aether and Hemera’s coupling resulted in a several of the most powerful deities in Greek mythology, including Gaia, Thalassa, Tartarus, Pontus, Aergia, and Uranus. Of all their children, Gaia and Thalassa were the most important mythological figures.

In all ancient sources, Hemera was paired with Aether (Light), both her brother and consort. Sources differ, however, when it comes to their children. According to one version Hemera and Aether bore the Titans Gaia (Earth), Uranus (Sky) and Thalassa (Sea), while another version cited only Thalassa as the child of Hemera and Aether. Yet another claimed Uranus as their only child.

HEMERA was the the primordial goddess (protogenos) of the day. She was a daughter of Erebos (Darkness) and Nyx (Night) and the sister and wife of Aither (Aether, Heavenly Light).
