20/12/2021 · Pre-history became history with the expedition of Don Gaspar de Portola who explored the area in 1769. With his men, he camped alongside El Palo Alto (the tall stick), the tree that today symbolizes both Palo Alto and Stanford University. Spanish and later Mexican land grants brought new settlers to the area.

Sometimes called Palo Alto’s second downtown, California Avenue was once home to a stately row of the finest houses in the city of Mayfield, which was incorporated into Palo Alto in 1925. Originally, Mayfield was the larger town --- that is until it made a fatal mistake --- at least fatal in terms of being its own entity.

The Times of Palo Alto, noting a businessman's plan to shelve the old designation, recently reminisced and dug into records. The community for which the name Mayfield stands, it said, is one of the oldest on the peninsula dating back nearly a century to James Otterson's inn on El Camino Real (1853) and the post office established there soon afterward (1855).

30/06/2021 · 1914. A garbage incinerator is built near Newell Street and Embarcadero Road. Most of Palo Alto's garbage is burned in the incinerator and excess wastes and residues are used as fill for the expansion of Embarcadero Road into the baylands. Municipal garbage collection begins.
