A Parliamentary democracy is government which is voted into power by the people, to act on their behalf. A Constitutional Monarchy is a situation where in a monarch, in this case, Queen Elizabeth II, is politically impartial and has limited powers.

Unlike the U.S. system, in which elections are held for members of the U.S. House every two years and Senators are elected to six-year terms on a staggered basis, since 2011, the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act (FTPA) has dictated that elections should be held at five-year intervals.

What I’m describing here is not specifically the UK system, but how it works in most parliamentary democracies in the world, on a more general level. The PM is not elected. This is the huge difference from a presidential system. After an election, the new Parliament votes for a new Government, including the PM.

How does the UK House of Commons work? The main chamber in the House of Commons consists of two sides facing each other Government and Opposition. MPs who support the Government sit on the Government benches and all other MPs sit on the Opposition benches. The layout thus forces smaller parties on to the Opposition side.
