Clovis I, (born c. 466—died November 27, 511, Paris, France), king of the Franks and ruler of much of Gaul from 481 to 511, a key period during the transformation of the Roman Empire into Europe. His dynasty, the Merovingians, survived more than 200 years, until the rise of the Carolingians in the 8th century.

Clovis I (Frankish: *Hlūdawīg) was the first Merovingian king of the Franks after he united them under the first Frankish kingdom. The son of Childeric I and Basina of Thuringia, he married Clotilde in 483 A.D., and conquered the last stronghold of the Romans, the kingdom of Soissons, in 486. Around 500, he compiled the Salic law, a Frankish civil law code of the early Middle Ages.

Clovis I is the founding father of the Merovingian dynasty, which he ruled from 481 AD until the time of his death in 511 AD. In 481 AD, Clovis I assumed the throne at the age of 15 when his father Childeric, king of the Salian Franks, died (Jenkins 16). Clovis I managed to consolidate the regions of Gaul under his rule and defeat the Visigoths, Alemanni, and Burgundians.
