Hanafuda, at its heart, is a covert set of gambling cards that were created in 1600s Japan to evade gambling bans: In 1648, Tenshō Karuta were banned by the Tokugawa shogunate. During prohibition, gambling with cards remained highly popular which led to disguised card designs.

18/05/2021 · Hanafuda (花札, “flower cards”) are a style of Japanese playing cards. They are typically smaller than Western playing cards, only 2⅛ by 1¼ inches (5.4 by 3.2 cm), but thicker and stiffer. On the face of each card is a depiction of flowers, tanzaku, subjects (animals and other objects), or culturally-significant scenes.

A hanafuda pack consists of twelve suits, each of four cards, so 48 (=12x4) cards in total. (The standard Western "poker" deck, by contrast, has four suits, each of thirteen cards (4x13=52 cards total)). In hanafuda, each suit corresponds to a month of the year (hence the twelve suits).

Hanafuda seem to originate in a combination of the themes of kai-awase — matching sets, poetry, conventionalized art — with the ideas introduced by the Portuguese playing cards — a regular structure of suits divided into different ranks.
