In modern Belgium, Walloons are, by law, termed a "distinctive linguistic and ethnic community" within the country, as are the neighbouring Flemish, a Germanic group. When understood as a regional identification, the ethnonym is also extended to refer to the inhabitants of the Walloon region in general, regardless of ethnicity or ancestry.
The Flemings, who constitute more than half of the Belgian population, speak Dutch (sometimes called Netherlandic), or Belgian Dutch (also called Flemish by English-speakers), and live mainly in the north and west. The Walloons, who make up about one-third of the Belgian population, speak dialects of French and live chiefly in the south and east.
However, there are Walloons who are able to speak a Belgian Dutch dialect when, for instance, one of their parents is a Fleming, speaking a particular Belgian Dutch dialect. Flemish is an adjective that’s used in combination with cultural, political and geographical subjects.
