Because the British people voted to Leave the EU. They prefer all the politicians making their laws to be elected by them, and only by them. We don’t share the ideology of the EU so best we part ways. If they feel slighted by that departure they should look on the bright side, now they have no awkward member to hold them back.

In respect of primary Law, it can be said that Great Britain didn’t put its stamp on the European Act of 1986, nor on the Treaties of Maastricht and Amsterdam (1992 and 1997, respectively), because the British government at that time didn’t want fundamental reforms, and for this reason the British influence on these Treaties is not very extensive.
