Matteo Ricci, Pinyin Limadou, Wade-Giles romanization Li-ma-tou, (born October 6, 1552, Macerata, Papal States [Italy]—died May 11, 1610, Beijing, China), Italian Jesuit missionary who introduced Christian teaching to the Chinese empire in the 16th century. He lived there for nearly 30 years and was a pioneer in the attempt at mutual comprehension between China and the West.
