The Pannonian Basin Province (“PBP”) consists of a large compound extensional basin of Neogene age overlying Paleogene basins and interior elements of the greater Alpine foldbelt. The Neogene basin system is approximately 600km from east to west and 500km from north to south, excluding the associated Transylvanian and Vienna Basins.

The Pannonian basin system is an integrap part of the Alpine mountain belts of east-central Europe. It is completely encircled by the Carpathian Mountains to the north and east, the Dinaric Alps to the south, and the Southern and Eastern Alps to the west.
