      Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian is a Pleistocene hominid site on the North China Plain. This site lies about 42 km south-west of Beijing and is at the juncture of the North China Plain and the Yanshan Mountains. Adequate water supplies and natural limestone caves in this area provided an optimal survival environment for early humans.
      What happened to Peking Man?
      By 1941, Beijing (Peking) had fallen under Japanese control, but it is believed that before Japanese forces could reach Union Medical College, the remains of Peking Man were stored in two big crates and transferred to the Chinese port of Qinhuangdao by US Marines, where security was guaranteed from the nearby American base, Camp Holcomb.
