    • Easy bleeding
    • Myalgia due to carnitine production
    • Roughness of the skin
    • Petechiae
    • Poor wound healing

    Causes

    • Insufficient intake of vitamin C or ascorbic acid which may arise as a result of the following factors :
    • Illnesses which can cause anorexia
    • Restrictive diet as a result of allergies
    • Poor diet due to old age
    • Excessive consumption of alcohol which leads to appetite loss

    Prevention

    • Take foods which are rich in vitamin C
    • Taking plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Older people should stay with people who can provide balanced diet to them
    • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol
    • Take multivitamins to prevent anorexia

    Complications

    If untreated for a prolonged period it may lead to

    • Iron deficiency
    • Anemia
    • Bleeding from the skin
    • Loosing of teeth
    • Gum diseases
    • Personality changes
    • Death may occur as a result of bleeding
