Jan 31, 2008 · 1844 —The telegraph is invented by Samuel Morse, inaugurating the development of rapid communication, a major influence on the growth and spread of English. Mid 19th century —A standard variety of American English develops. English is established in Australia, South Africa, India, and other British colonial outposts.

The Industrial Revolution and the Rise of the British Empire during the 18th, 19th and early 20th-century saw the expansion of the English language. The advances and discoveries in science and technology during the Industrial Revolution saw a need for new words, phrases, and concepts to describe these ideas and inventions.

The further development of English literature happened with the publication of Samuel Johnson’s “Dictionary of the English Language” in 1755, and Robert Lowth’s grammar in 1761. The extensive (two volume) work of Samuel Johnson was simplified by the single volume of his dictionary in 1756 which continued to be used up to the 20th century.

Oct 19, 2016 · Early Modern English formed during the late 15th century and continued through to the mid-to-late 17th century. As James I came to the throne in 1603 the English standard began to influence what was both spoken and written in the UK, including Middle Scots in Scotland.
