  1. Technically, i686 is actually a 32-bit instruction set (part of the x86 family line), while x86_64 is a 64-bit instruction set (also referred to as amd64). From the sound of it, you have a 64-bit machine that has 32-bit libraries for backwards compatibility. That should be totally fine.

25/03/2015 · AMD64 is the real 64 bits architecture that AMD created and intel licensed it and uses it even today (just as AMD had the license to use x86 on the 32 bit CPUs). x86_64 far as i know is nothing more than a 32 bit CPU that can address the extra memory that a supposed 64 bit system need (so like a 32 bit system that recognizes and uses more than 4GB of RAM).

“X86-64 “1999 designed by AMD,Amd publishes 64 bit set for IA-32 for the first time, which is called x86-64 (later renamed AMD64). Later, it was adopted by Intel,Now Intel calls it Intel 64 AMD64. AMD64 architecture adds 64 bit registers on IA-32, and is compatible with early 16 bit and 32-bit software, which makes it easy for existing X86 based compilers to convert to

AMD64 applies to a 64-bit operating system while x86 applies to a 32-bit operating system - but I don't typically see them presented this way if you're using the correct place to download. What is the link to the location where you saw the options presented in this fashion and from which you did the download?

17/08/2010 · Both the x86_amd64 and amd64 versions create x64 native executables which would both run as a native 64-bit process on a 64-bit OS. WOW64 is for running 32-bit native executables on an x64 OS. The x86 compiler will generate native 32-bit executables which would run under WOW64.

Answer (1 of 6): x86, x64, x86-64, amd64 and intel 64 refer to the different instruction set architectures (ISA). Every processor implements some ISA. ISA specifies the instructions that the processor can execute and the format for each instruction.

        • The biggest difference between x86 and x64 is that they can access the different amounts of RAM. The x86 (32-bit processors) has a limited amount of maximum physical memory at 4 GB, while x64 (64-bit processors) can handle 8, 16, and some even 32GB physical memory. A computer with x64 can work with both 32-bit programs and 64-bit programs. However, a comput…
