The Caddo tribe lived in what we now know as Northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and Oklahoma East Texas. During the 19 th century, the Indians were placed forcibly on a reservation in Texas and then once again moved to Indian Territory in 1859.

Caddo Indians enter written history in chronicles of the Hernando de Soto expedition, which describe encounters during the Spanish passage through southwest Arkansas. When the Spaniards crossed the threshold to Caddo country on June 20, 1542, they entered a nation uniquely distinguished by language, social structure, tradition, and way of life.

Caddo (Tso’to) Lake holds a special place in Caddo traditional history. The Caddo are said to have first emerged into this world near Caddo Lake through a cave in a hill. The first Caddo brought along some things they would need to live above ground. Fire, pipe and drum were carried by a man, while corn and pumpkin seeds were brought by his wife.
