Around 1523, the Florentine navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano convinced King Francis I to commission an expedition to find a western route to Cathay (China). Giovanni da Verrazzano est le premier émissaire français à utiliser l'expression de « Nouvelle-France » (en latin : Nova Francia) pour nommer les terres qu'il avait découvertes en Amérique. En effet, en 1524 il avait accompli au nom du roi de France François I une mission de reconnaissance le long du littoral atlantique de l'Amérique du Nord , faisant escale sur la côte almouchiquoise. À noter qu'il inscrit sur les cartes le titre de " Nova Gallia " comme première appellation.
