What does Shinto shrine stand for?
Shinto shrines (神社, jinja) are places of worship and the dwellings of the kami, the Shinto "gods". Sacred objects of worship that represent the kami are stored in the innermost chamber of the shrine where they cannot be seen by anybody. People visit shrines in order to pay respect to the kami or to pray for good fortune.

    Is Shinto like paganism?
To answer your first question: yes. Both Shinto and European Paganism are animistic and, to a certain extent, both have shamanic elements. I consider it to be a Pagan religion; the oldest continuous Pagan religion there is depending on whether or not a person considers Hinduism to be Pagan or not.

    Is Shinto considered a religion?
Shinto was not a formal religion. The faith was based on rituals and stories that allowed people to better understand their world. Shinto involves the worship of kami. Kami can be a form of animals or natural objects. They are said to be responsive to human prayer and have the ability to influence natural forces.
