    • Congestion

    Causes

    The virus enters the body through the nose, mouth and eyes

    • Caused by viral infections. Commonly by a virus known as rhinovirus.

    The cold virus can spread by:

    • Transmitted through airborne exposure to air droplets
    • Transmitted through direct contact
    • Sharing of personal items such as utensils and towels
    • The risk factors include:
    • Age - children below 6 years are at high risk of colds
    • Weakened immune system
    • Crowded places
    • Smoking

    Prevention

    • Wash hands with soap and water
    • Disinfect kitchen, bathrooms
    • Sneeze into tissues and discard them
    • Avoid sharing of items such as utensils
    • Avoid close contact with people who have cold

    Complications

    If untreated, complications may include:

    • Acute ear infections
    • Triggering asthma
    • Acute sinusitis-infection of the sinuses
    • Secondary infections such as strep throat, pneumonia
