Departing from England on April 1, 1791, he went by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he surveyed part of the southwest coast. After stops at Tahiti and the Hawaiian Islands, Vancouver sighted the west coast of North America at 39°27′ N on April 17, 1792.

The route Vancouver took was the one previously followed by Cook; the Cape of Good Hope, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and on to Hawaii where they would winter. In March 1792, the ships departed from their winter harbor in the Hawaiian Islands.

Item is an atlas consisting of sixteen map plates published in 1798, based on George Vancouver's surveys of North West America 1791-1795. All maps show depth soundings, routes of the HMS Discovery and HMS Chatham as well as the portions of coast surveyed.

04/03/2003 · George Vancouver was an important explorer of Puget Sound. He served for 25 years in the British Navy, and commanded the 1791-1792 British expedition to the North Pacific. In April 1792, George Vancouver entered the Strait of Juan de Fuca and commenced his exploration of Puget Sound.
