Mauritania, originally, has been populated by the indigenous, Berber tribes since 3 AD. At around 8 AD, the Arabs came and introduced Islam to the Berbers. It was also during this time that contacts from kingdoms from Sudan, Ghana, Songhai and Mali started to pick up either for trade or because of armed conflicts.

History. The Berbers were some of the first people to inhabit the northern Saharan region which is now known as Mauritania. In fact, the country’s name comes from the Berber language. They descended on the land from north Africa in the 3rd century and the Arab population followed in the 8th century.

Mauritania became independent in 1960, and the first thirty years of independence were marked by single-party or military rule.
